Lost Destination: Eel Pie Island Hotel
Situated in the River Thames at Twickenham, Eel Pie Island was the site of the legendary 19th century Eel Pie Island Hotel. The hotel was a major jazz and blues venue in the 1950s and a rock venue in the 1960s when it played host to some of the most influential British musicians of that period including The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart and The Yardbirds. The club temporarily closed in 1967 and then briefly re-opened in 1969 when it saw performances from Black Sabbath, Genesis and Hawkwind, before burning down in a mysterious fire in 1971.
One of four music additions to our Lost Destination series of prints which takes inspiration from the iconic travel posters of the first half of the 20th century. They celebrate buildings that in their heyday were destinations in their own right, but have since been either immersed in the everyday or demolished.
